Pillow Talk – Beyond the Mattress
I write a lot about the benefits of organic, naturally-derived latex mattresses but should you stop there in your quest to make your bedroom healthier and greener? Absolutely not. Your pillow is perhaps the most intimate part of your boudoir and, when you’re on the hunt for healthy sleep solutions, it shouldn’t be overlooked. Take a peek at my top tips for picking the perfect pillow to complement your natural latex mattress:
It’s what’s on the inside that counts
Are you a pillow piler? You know who I’m talking about—people so pillow-happy they cover their beds in silky, fluffy goodness. But what lies beneath your beautiful bed accessories? Just like non organic mattresses, most pillows are treated with toxic chemicals linked to a mountain of health risks. (How comfy does skin irritation, cancer, or lung damage sound?) That’s why it’s vital to extend your mattress research to include your pillow, too. Lucky for you, the good news of naturally-derived latex mattresses extends to their matching head beds. Unsure about the contents of your favorite cushion? Check the label. Most textiles treated with fire retardants are marked as such.
To contour or not to contour?
Pay attention rubber lovers! You can pair your natural latex mattress with a contour shaped rubber pillow. Contour pillows take care of cricks and cranky shoulders in the morning by properly supporting your head and neck all night long. They’re also known for stopping snoring in its tracks by keeping your airways wide open. However, if you sleep on your stomach, a contour pillow may take some getting used to. If that’s you, think of opting for a flatter design made out of organic cotton or wool—great for “hot sleepers” because of its cooling properties.
Stop smacking, keep sleeping
Sick of smacking your pillow to whip it into shape? Pillows made with naturally-derived latex don’t pack down, meaning you won’t toss and turn all night and neither will your pillow. Love your natural latex mattress but looking for a silkier feel up top? Kapok pillows, made from the flower of a fruit tree, or wool pillows have a luxurious texture while also retaining their shape—the best option for a 5 star experience right in the comfort of home.
