WJ Southard opened his mattress store in Syracuse, NY in 1915, back in the days when most jobs were labor intensive. Southard’s goal was to craft mattresses so that every body could get rest it needed after a long day of hard, back-breaking work. A lot of things have been learned since 1915, mostly that old is the new new, so today they handcraft your mattress using the same techniques and materials they used almost 100 years ago producing a mattress that is better for you and the environment.
WJ Southard use materials as natural as sleep itself:
- Organic Cotton – for the same reason we eat organic food, why expose ourselves to pesticides and harmful chemicals while we sleep a third of our lives.
- Pure Wool – your body rejuvenates and detoxifies when sleeping by perspiring – natural wool wicks away body moisture keeping you dry all night.
- Natural Latex – its natural elasticity and flexibility conforms to your body relieving pressure off your joints and aligns your spine, giving you a rest necessary to feel refreshed not tired and achy.
The Cazenovian Tight Top
Like the latex mattress that they made for your grandparents, pure and simple, nothing fancy, just a good solid organic mattress built with 6 inches of natural latex inside a quilted cover made with organic cotton and pure wool. Not recommended for individuals over 160lbs.

The Cazenovian Pillow Top
The Cazenovian Pillow Top is the Cazenovian with an extra 3″ layer of latex which provides a pacifying comfort by wrapping your natural curves.
Style – Two-sided, quilted mattress with a two-sided removable quilted pillowtop (flipable)
Feel – medium to plush
Materials – 6″ solid core of natural latex plus a 3″ pillowtop, 20 oz wool batting, fabric made with organic cotton

- Made with our blend of organic and pure wool. Only the good stuff. Nothing else. No polyester, flame retardants or other synthetic materials.

- Sheep raised in Northern California and Oregon.
